You Had to Be There

In 1972, a scrappy Toronto production of Godspell brought together a remarkable group of young performers—including Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Gilda Radner, Andrea Martin, and Victor Garber—who would go on to reshape comedy. Through candid interviews, archival material, and playful recreations, YOU HAD TO BE THERE explores how this unlikely theatrical community became a breeding ground for the comedic voices behind SCTV, Saturday Night Live, and generations of comedy that followed. It’s funny, heartfelt, and full of infectious nostalgia.
